In 1993, speed skaters began racing on
inline skates rather than the conventional
roller skates, and this is when Chad
discovered his true hidden talent. At the
age of sixteen, Chad climbed his way up
through the inline speed skating ranks.
There was a new athlete ready to
revolutionize this young sport.
Chad’s skating technique was quite
unorthodox, and people across the world
began to realize it. It was recognized by
coaches and technicians who soon named it
the “double push.” The double push is now
the standard technique used in inline speed
skating.
In December, 2002, the era of ice speed
skating began for Chad. He decided to
make this leap after watching many former
competitors switch from inline to ice. Chad
qualified for the US national team after
skating for only two months and moved to
Salt Lake City immediately to begin training.
After overcoming technical criticism from
coaches and athletes in 2003, Chad placed
5th in first world championship. On
February 8, 2004, he shocked the ice
skating world by winning the World All-
Around Championship in Hamar, Norway.
Chad Hedrick became only the third
American to accomplish this feat in more
than 100 years.
